What we do in kitchens

In a kitchen, tile is what we set

Walk into a finished kitchen and the first thing you see is the floor and the wall behind the cooktop. Those two surfaces are what Bencke’s Tile sets.

Is it time

Signs your kitchen needs more than a refresh

Cabinets that sag, stick or have swollen near the sink. Counters that are chipped, stained or too short on workspace. A floor that is cracked, cupped or tiring to stand on. Too few outlets for the things you plug in. A layout where two people cannot cook at once. A fan that does not clear smoke.

Any one of these can be fixed alone. Several together are a sign to plan a larger project.

What you can ask for

Kitchen work you can ask us about

  • Backsplash

New tile on the wall behind the range, from a simple subway to a full pattern.

  • Kitchen floor tile

Herringbone, terracotta hexagon or checkerboard, to name three we have laid.

  • Tile repairs

A client once asked for an emergency kitchen and bathroom tile fix, and the crew was out two days later.

Tile in the plan

How tile fits into a kitchen remodel

A backsplash is set after the countertops are in, because the tile has to meet them. So the order of a kitchen job matters, and tile has a slot in it.

Floors need a plan too. Ask whether the tile runs under the cabinets and appliances or stops at their edge. It changes how much tile you buy and how the floor holds up if the cabinets change someday.

Decide first

The decisions that shape a kitchen remodel

  • Layout

Where the sink, stove and refrigerator sit controls how the kitchen works. Moving plumbing or gas lines costs more than leaving them in place.

  • Cabinets

Stock, semi-custom or custom, in wood or other materials. Decide the style first, because everything else follows it.

  • Counters

Quartz, granite, solid surface, butcher block and others. Each has its own look and its own care routine.

  • Flooring

Tile, wood or vinyl. Tile is hard and cool, easy to clean and tough on dropped dishes.

  • Backsplash

The tile on the wall behind the counters. It ties the cabinets and counters together.

  • Lighting and outlets

Light under the cabinets, a main light overhead and enough outlets at counter height. This is cheap to plan and hard to add later.

  • Ventilation

A hood that vents outside clears smoke and grease. One that only recirculates the air does less.

  • Appliances

Get the sizes before the cabinets are built. A refrigerator that does not fit is a costly surprise.

  • Walls, paint and trim

Old cabinets hide worn walls. Plan for patching and paint, and for trim where counters, tile and cabinets meet.

The usual order

How a kitchen remodel usually unfolds

The order changes from job to job, but a common sequence runs like this: planning and ordering, demolition, plumbing, electrical and gas work, walls and floors, cabinets, countertops, backsplash, and finally the last connections and paint.

The backsplash comes late because it has to meet the counter. The floor can go before or after the cabinets, and that choice changes how much tile you need. Ask any contractor for their sequence. How well it is planned tells you a lot.

Inspections can fall between steps, such as after the rough plumbing and electrical work. Ask which ones your project needs and who schedules them, because a missed inspection can stop the job.

Bencke’s Tile Bathroom Remodel

Janna K.Bathroom remodel

We had such a great experience working with Gabriel and his team at Bencke’s Tile Bath Remodel. From the very beginning, Gabriel was incredibly communicative, responsive, responsible, and someone we felt we could completely trust. He always kept us updated, answered every question, and made what could have been a stressful renovation feel easy.

Our Jack-and-Jill bathroom was 25 years old and very builder-grade and felt cramped with way too many doors. Gabriel helped completely transform the space into a bathroom that feels so much larger, brighter, and honestly looks like something out of a magazine.

The quality of the work is exceptional. They waterproofed the bathroom properly, insulated the tub, installed a linear drain with a perfectly sloped floor so the water drains exactly where it should, and the tile work is absolutely flawless. The floating vanity, mirror, and every finish were installed with so much attention to detail.

What I appreciated just as much was that Gabriel truly stands behind his work. If we noticed even the smallest thing, he was happy to come back and make it right without any hesitation. It’s rare to find a contractor who genuinely wants everything to be perfect.

We interviewed several contractors before choosing Gabriel, and I am so glad we did. The final result exceeded our expectations, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gabriel and his team to anyone looking for a bathroom remodel. They do beautiful work, they’re honest, and they’re the kind of people you actually enjoy working with. Adding the before and after pictures for reference!

Avoid these

Mistakes that make kitchens cost more

Changing the layout after the cabinets are ordered. Picking a counter before the sink and cooktop sizes are known. Underestimating how many outlets you need. Forgetting where the refrigerator, microwave and trash will go. Choosing a look from a magazine without checking that your room can carry it. Settling for a hood that only recirculates air is another common regret.

Skipping the budget for small things, like handles, trim, paint and the wall repair once the old cabinets come off. And leaving no room in the plan for what a wall might reveal.

During the job

Living without your kitchen

Ask how long the kitchen will be out of use and what could stretch it. Plan a temporary kitchen in another room: a refrigerator, a microwave, a kettle and paper plates. Ask when the water, power and gas will be off. If you have children, pets or a medical diet, say so early. Dust travels, so ask how the rest of the house is sealed off. Ask how the work area will be closed off and where tools and materials will be kept.

Visit prep

Sketch your kitchen before anyone visits

Measure the kitchen if you can and draw what sits where. Take photos of each wall. Make a list of what works and what drives you crazy. Save pictures of kitchens you like and note what you like in each.

Decide what has to stay, like a window or the place for the refrigerator. Say what budget range feels comfortable, so the first talk starts honest. And ask which parts of a kitchen the contractor handles directly.
