Navy tile shower and marble-look floor in a bathroom
Before you start

A remodel should fix what bothers you every morning

Maybe the shower is too small, the floor is cold and cracked, or the room just feels closed in. If you look at your Richmond bathroom and think it is time, the first job is deciding what changes and what stays.

A good remodel is not only about how the room looks on the last day. It is also about the layers under the tile that keep water where it belongs. A good plan covers both, so the pretty part still looks good years from now.

Is it time

Signs your bathroom is asking for a remodel

Some bathrooms just look tired, and that is reason enough. But a few signs mean the problem runs deeper than looks, and waiting tends to make it more expensive.

A soft or bouncy floor near the tub or toilet. Water has probably been getting under the floor for a while. Grout and caulk that keep failing. If you redo them and they crack again within a season, the wall or floor behind them may be moving or leaking. A musty smell that comes back after cleaning. Mold grows where moisture stays, often behind the surface you can see.

Tile that is loose or sounds hollow when you tap it. It has lost its bond to the wall. A stain on the ceiling below. In a two-story house, a water mark under the bathroom is a reason to open the floor, not just to paint the ceiling. A fan that never clears the mirror. Steam that stays in the room soaks into the walls.

What is included

What a bathroom remodel with Bencke’s can cover

  • Demo and layout

The old room comes out when the plan calls for it, and the layout is talked through before anything is torn out.

  • Tile on walls, shower and floor

Set by a crew whose trade is tile. You choose the pattern and the grout color.

Plan the room

Four choices that shape a bathroom remodel

Layout. Keeping the toilet, tub and sink where they are costs far less than moving them, because moving a drain means opening the floor. If the room feels tight, the answer is often a smaller change, like a different door swing or a wall-hung vanity.

Shower or tub. Many people keep a tub in one bathroom and give the second one a walk-in shower. Think about who uses the room: kids, guests, or someone who needs an easy step in.

Tile. Size, pattern and finish change both the look and the work. Large tile means fewer joints, and a small tile on the shower floor grips better. Pick samples in the room’s own light.

Save money

Common mistakes that make a bathroom remodel cost more

  • Changing the plan after the walls are open

A new door, a moved sink or a bigger shower is easy to draw and costly to build once the pipes and boards are in. Settle the layout on paper first.

  • Picking fixtures late

Special-order vanities, faucets and glass can take a while to arrive. If the plan waits on them, the whole job waits. Choose them early and ask when each one will be delivered.

  • Buying exactly enough tile

Cuts, breakage and patterns use more tile than the floor area suggests. Buy extra, and keep a few spares for a future repair, because the same tile may be discontinued later.

  • Covering a problem instead of fixing it

New tile over a soft floor or a damp wall will fail, and then you pay twice. If the old work is bad, it has to come out.

  • Skipping the fan

A weak or missing exhaust fan is one of the cheapest things to fix during a remodel and one of the costliest to fix afterward. The fan should vent outside the house, not into the attic, and a timer or humidity sensor keeps it running while the steam is still there.

  • Comparing quotes that do not match

One quote may include the waterproofing, the vanity and the cleanup, and another may not. Ask each contractor to list what is in and what is out, line by line.

Live through it

Questions to ask about life during the job

A remodel takes your bathroom away for a while, and every house handles that differently. Do not guess. Ask how long that bathroom will be out of use and what could stretch it, and ask for the answer in plain words.

Ask where the dust will go and how the rest of the house is protected. Ask when the water will be off, and for how long each time. If this is your only bathroom, plan where you will shower, and mention it early if anyone at home has a health need.

Bencke’s Tile Bathroom Remodel

Janna K.Bathroom remodel

We had such a great experience working with Gabriel and his team at Bencke’s Tile Bath Remodel. From the very beginning, Gabriel was incredibly communicative, responsive, responsible, and someone we felt we could completely trust. He always kept us updated, answered every question, and made what could have been a stressful renovation feel easy.

Our Jack-and-Jill bathroom was 25 years old and very builder-grade and felt cramped with way too many doors. Gabriel helped completely transform the space into a bathroom that feels so much larger, brighter, and honestly looks like something out of a magazine.

The quality of the work is exceptional. They waterproofed the bathroom properly, insulated the tub, installed a linear drain with a perfectly sloped floor so the water drains exactly where it should, and the tile work is absolutely flawless. The floating vanity, mirror, and every finish were installed with so much attention to detail.

What I appreciated just as much was that Gabriel truly stands behind his work. If we noticed even the smallest thing, he was happy to come back and make it right without any hesitation. It’s rare to find a contractor who genuinely wants everything to be perfect.

We interviewed several contractors before choosing Gabriel, and I am so glad we did. The final result exceeded our expectations, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gabriel and his team to anyone looking for a bathroom remodel. They do beautiful work, they’re honest, and they’re the kind of people you actually enjoy working with. Adding the before and after pictures for reference!

Before the visit

Get ready for the visit with a short list

A good first visit is a conversation, and you can make it more useful. Write down what bothers you, in order. Take photos of the room, any leaks and the places you want changed. Save a handful of bathrooms you like, and note what you like in each: the tile, the shower, the light.

Decide who else should be there, like a partner with opinions about the shower. Think of your budget as a range you are comfortable with, and say it out loud.

One client’s story

A cramped Jack-and-Jill bathroom, made larger

A Google review from Janna K. tells of a bathroom that was 25 years old, builder-grade and crowded by too many doors. After the remodel the client says it feels much larger and brighter, and "looks like something out of a magazine."

The same review lists what went into it: proper waterproofing, an insulated tub, a linear drain with a floor sloped toward it, a floating vanity and a mirror.

Why Bencke’s

What clients say about working with us

Read the Google reviews and the same things come up: quick answers, a clear estimate, a clean worksite, and a crew that comes back to make a small thing right. One client said the whole remodel felt easy, even though they had expected a stressful one.

Several reviewers name the owner as the person who came for the estimate, answered their questions and came back to fix small things.

Frequently asked questions

Don’t see your question? Call or write and we will answer it.

It depends on the size of the room, how much of it changes and the materials you pick. The estimate is free and in your home, so you get a real number for your job.

It depends on the job. A small bathroom with a new shower is a different job from a full gut and rebuild. Ask about the schedule for your room at the free estimate.

You can usually stay home, but that bathroom is out of use until the job is done.

It depends on what changes and where your house is. The city of Richmond and the nearby counties each have their own building offices.

A shower remodel changes the shower, from the walls to the floor. A bathroom remodel can change the whole room: layout, floor, vanity, lighting and the shower too. Many Richmond homeowners start by asking about one and end up planning the other.

Tell us about your bathroom and we will call you back.
