We had such a great experience working with Gabriel and his team at Bencke’s Tile Bath Remodel. From the very beginning, Gabriel was incredibly communicative, responsive, responsible, and someone we felt we could completely trust. He always kept us updated, answered every question, and made what could have been a stressful renovation feel easy.
Our Jack-and-Jill bathroom was 25 years old and very builder-grade and felt cramped with way too many doors. Gabriel helped completely transform the space into a bathroom that feels so much larger, brighter, and honestly looks like something out of a magazine.
The quality of the work is exceptional. They waterproofed the bathroom properly, insulated the tub, installed a linear drain with a perfectly sloped floor so the water drains exactly where it should, and the tile work is absolutely flawless. The floating vanity, mirror, and every finish were installed with so much attention to detail.
What I appreciated just as much was that Gabriel truly stands behind his work. If we noticed even the smallest thing, he was happy to come back and make it right without any hesitation. It’s rare to find a contractor who genuinely wants everything to be perfect.
We interviewed several contractors before choosing Gabriel, and I am so glad we did. The final result exceeded our expectations, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gabriel and his team to anyone looking for a bathroom remodel. They do beautiful work, they’re honest, and they’re the kind of people you actually enjoy working with. A big county south of the James, from Bon Air to Matoaca
Chesterfield is a county on the south side of Richmond, and a Chesterfield address can say Richmond, Midlothian or Chester. Midlothian and Chester have pages of their own. The county seat is Chesterfield Court House.
Henrico and Powhatan counties are neighbors. Communities named in county listings include Bon Air, Brandermill, Woodlake, Matoaca, Bensley and Robious. On our service-area map, the point for Chesterfield is about 12 miles from the point for Richmond, in a straight line, which is a map measure and not a drive time.
Chesterfield is a 1990 county with an older third
The Census Bureau’s figures for 2020 to 2024 put the median home in Chesterfield County at 1990, give or take a year. The county has 145,709 homes. The 1980s are the biggest decade, with 20.5 percent, 29.2 percent were built before 1980 and 12.9 percent before 1970.
A bathroom from the 1980s is now about forty years old. The tile on the tub wall and the caulk along the tub are where age tends to show: a loose tile, a soft spot, a grout line that keeps cracking. Those are signs that water has been getting in, and they are worth checking before new tile covers them.
Chesterfield: water, walls and owners
Soft county water
Chesterfield says its water is naturally soft, in the range of 40 to 70 parts per million, or 2.0 to 4.0 grains per gallon. Glass and fixtures stay clearer with soft water. Grout still needs care where steam lingers.
Three sources, one county
The county’s water report names the Swift Creek Reservoir, Lake Chesdin and the James River as sources. You do not need to know which one feeds your tap to plan a shower.
Leaving walls where they are
Moving, adding or removing a wall is on the county’s list of work that needs a permit. A layout that keeps the walls where they are keeps the plan simple.
Mostly owners
The Census counts 76.7 percent of occupied homes in Chesterfield County as owner-occupied, so the tile, the pattern and the grout are usually the owner’s call.

Who to call in Chesterfield about a permit
Chesterfield County Building Inspection, part of Community Development, is at 9800 Government Center Parkway in Chesterfield.
The county’s list of work that needs no permit includes new floor coverings such as vinyl, carpet or hardwood, and replacing plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets and faucets. Moving, adding or removing a wall needs a permit. Ceramic wall or floor tile is not named on the list either way, so a short call to the office settles it for your bathroom.

We love our new kitchen tile backsplash! Working with Bencke’s was a great experience, from the start with good communication and professionalism to the finish with a beautiful job well done!
Gabriel came by to give an estimate on doing tile work and was very thorough in articulating his approach, timeline and cost. He gave a wonderful idea to put a marble counter ledge which turned out really beautiful. He was so quick in starting the project and kept everything so clean with protecting furniture surround the bathroom. His crew were so polite and did an amazing job. I’m so grateful for them completing this so quickly. Gabriel went above and beyond to get everything done quickly but also with excellence. I would highly recommend him and his crew!
We needed an access panel for our tile bathtub and Gabriel was able to give us a quick estimate. He delivered flawlessly and we are very happy!
I can't say enough about Gabriel and his team. I put in an emergency request for kitchen and bathroom tile repairs/replacements on a Tuesday, and they were out fixing it and doing an amazing job by Thursday!! Highly recommend. Can't say enough good things! Thank you!

Don’t see your question? Call or write and we will answer it.
Yes. Chesterfield is one of our three main areas, with Henrico and Mechanicsville, and the estimate is free and at your home.
Fewer mineral crusts on glass, yes. Soap film and mildew still come from steam, so a fan and good caulk matter in any water.
Maybe. Loose tile, a soft floor or a stain below the room can mean water got in. Someone looks at the room at the free estimate.
Not always. Many addresses in Chesterfield County say Richmond. The county line decides which building office you use.
