We had such a great experience working with Gabriel and his team at Bencke’s Tile Bath Remodel. From the very beginning, Gabriel was incredibly communicative, responsive, responsible, and someone we felt we could completely trust. He always kept us updated, answered every question, and made what could have been a stressful renovation feel easy.
Our Jack-and-Jill bathroom was 25 years old and very builder-grade and felt cramped with way too many doors. Gabriel helped completely transform the space into a bathroom that feels so much larger, brighter, and honestly looks like something out of a magazine.
The quality of the work is exceptional. They waterproofed the bathroom properly, insulated the tub, installed a linear drain with a perfectly sloped floor so the water drains exactly where it should, and the tile work is absolutely flawless. The floating vanity, mirror, and every finish were installed with so much attention to detail.
What I appreciated just as much was that Gabriel truly stands behind his work. If we noticed even the smallest thing, he was happy to come back and make it right without any hesitation. It’s rare to find a contractor who genuinely wants everything to be perfect.
We interviewed several contractors before choosing Gabriel, and I am so glad we did. The final result exceeded our expectations, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gabriel and his team to anyone looking for a bathroom remodel. They do beautiful work, they’re honest, and they’re the kind of people you actually enjoy working with. Chesterfield bathrooms from the 1980s still hold their first tubs
The Census survey for 2020 to 2024 gives Chesterfield County a median build year of 1990, give or take a year. About 29.2 percent of its 145,709 homes, roughly 42,500, were built before 1980, and the 1980s are the largest decade at 20.5 percent.
A tub from the 1980s is around forty years old, and it is often the one the house was built with. If it has cracks or a loose surround, the remodel starts there. The shower usually fits the same alcove, and the drain and the wall behind are what need a look.
Chesterfield: plan the alcove and the water
A long county, a long list of ages
Chesterfield has houses from every decade. Two bathrooms the same size can hide very different work behind the tile, so the wall gets opened and checked first.
Walls can change the permit answer
The county’s list of work that needs a permit includes moving, adding or removing a wall. A shower that needs more room than the alcove has is a different plan from one that fits it.
Water from 2 to 4 grains
The county gives its water as 40 to 70 milligrams per liter, about 2 to 4 grains per gallon. That range is soft to moderate, and glass and fixtures show spots less than in hard-water areas.
Three in four own
The Census counts 76.7 percent of occupied Chesterfield homes as owner-occupied. For most households the shower is one decision to make at the kitchen table.

Chesterfield’s building office and what its list says
Chesterfield County Building Inspection is at 9800 Government Center Parkway. Its list of work that needs no permit names new floor coverings and replacing plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets and faucets.
Wall tile is not named on that list, and moving, adding or removing a wall does need a permit. A conversion changes the drain, so call the office with your plan before you commit.

We love our new kitchen tile backsplash! Working with Bencke’s was a great experience, from the start with good communication and professionalism to the finish with a beautiful job well done!
Gabriel came by to give an estimate on doing tile work and was very thorough in articulating his approach, timeline and cost. He gave a wonderful idea to put a marble counter ledge which turned out really beautiful. He was so quick in starting the project and kept everything so clean with protecting furniture surround the bathroom. His crew were so polite and did an amazing job. I’m so grateful for them completing this so quickly. Gabriel went above and beyond to get everything done quickly but also with excellence. I would highly recommend him and his crew!
We needed an access panel for our tile bathtub and Gabriel was able to give us a quick estimate. He delivered flawlessly and we are very happy!
I can't say enough about Gabriel and his team. I put in an emergency request for kitchen and bathroom tile repairs/replacements on a Tuesday, and they were out fixing it and doing an amazing job by Thursday!! Highly recommend. Can't say enough good things! Thank you!
Frequently asked questions

It may well be. The 1980s are the county’s biggest decade of building, and a tub that old is likely the one the house came with. We look at it at the free estimate.
Its no-permit examples are new floor coverings and fixtures like sinks, toilets and faucets. Moving a wall does need a permit, so ask the Building Inspection office about your plan.
Chesterfield is one of our main areas, and the estimate is free at your home. On our service-area map the county point is about 12 miles from Richmond in a straight line, a map measure and not a drive time.
