We had such a great experience working with Gabriel and his team at Bencke’s Tile Bath Remodel. From the very beginning, Gabriel was incredibly communicative, responsive, responsible, and someone we felt we could completely trust. He always kept us updated, answered every question, and made what could have been a stressful renovation feel easy.
Our Jack-and-Jill bathroom was 25 years old and very builder-grade and felt cramped with way too many doors. Gabriel helped completely transform the space into a bathroom that feels so much larger, brighter, and honestly looks like something out of a magazine.
The quality of the work is exceptional. They waterproofed the bathroom properly, insulated the tub, installed a linear drain with a perfectly sloped floor so the water drains exactly where it should, and the tile work is absolutely flawless. The floating vanity, mirror, and every finish were installed with so much attention to detail.
What I appreciated just as much was that Gabriel truly stands behind his work. If we noticed even the smallest thing, he was happy to come back and make it right without any hesitation. It’s rare to find a contractor who genuinely wants everything to be perfect.
We interviewed several contractors before choosing Gabriel, and I am so glad we did. The final result exceeded our expectations, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gabriel and his team to anyone looking for a bathroom remodel. They do beautiful work, they’re honest, and they’re the kind of people you actually enjoy working with. West of the city, in Chesterfield County
Midlothian is a community in Chesterfield County, west of the city of Richmond. It only became a Census area of its own in the 2020 count, and the mailing area people mean by Midlothian is bigger than the Census line.
Powhatan County, Chester and Short Pump are neighbors. Places named in listings of the area include Salisbury, Brandermill, Woodlake, Bon Air and Genito, and some of those, such as Brandermill and Woodlake, are Census areas of their own. On our service-area map, the point for Midlothian is about 12 miles from the point for Richmond, in a straight line.
Midlothian homes are young, and the bathrooms are catching up
Inside the Census line, the American Community Survey for 2020 to 2024 puts the median home at 2001, give or take two years. The area has 7,936 homes. The 2000s are the biggest decade, with 29.5 percent, and 8.9 percent were built before 1980.
A bathroom from 2001 is in its mid-twenties. Plumbing from that time is less likely to be the worry. What tends to need attention is the original tub surround, grout lines that have darkened and a builder-grade shower that no longer suits the family.
Midlothian bathrooms: four useful facts
Few homes before 1980
Only about one home in eleven in the Census area predates 1980. Old plaster walls and first-generation plumbing are the exception.
Chesterfield’s soft water
The county describes its water as naturally soft, 40 to 70 parts per million. That is a county range, not a Midlothian reading. Soft water is easy on glass, but steam still feeds mildew.
Walls are a permit question
In Chesterfield, moving, adding or removing a wall is on the list of work that needs a permit. A shower that fits inside the old tub’s footprint keeps the plan simpler.
Owners lead
The Census counts 73.5 percent of occupied homes in the Midlothian area as owner-occupied, so the tile and the grout are usually the owner’s choice.

Who to call in Midlothian about a permit
Midlothian has no building office of its own. Permits go through Chesterfield County Building Inspection, part of Community Development, at 9800 Government Center Parkway in Chesterfield.
The county’s list of work with no permit names new floor coverings such as vinyl, carpet or hardwood, and replacing plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets and faucets. Wall tile and ceramic floors are not named, so the office is the one to ask.

We love our new kitchen tile backsplash! Working with Bencke’s was a great experience, from the start with good communication and professionalism to the finish with a beautiful job well done!
Gabriel came by to give an estimate on doing tile work and was very thorough in articulating his approach, timeline and cost. He gave a wonderful idea to put a marble counter ledge which turned out really beautiful. He was so quick in starting the project and kept everything so clean with protecting furniture surround the bathroom. His crew were so polite and did an amazing job. I’m so grateful for them completing this so quickly. Gabriel went above and beyond to get everything done quickly but also with excellence. I would highly recommend him and his crew!
We needed an access panel for our tile bathtub and Gabriel was able to give us a quick estimate. He delivered flawlessly and we are very happy!
I can't say enough about Gabriel and his team. I put in an emergency request for kitchen and bathroom tile repairs/replacements on a Tuesday, and they were out fixing it and doing an amazing job by Thursday!! Highly recommend. Can't say enough good things! Thank you!

Maybe. If the tub surround, the grout or the shower layout bother you, yes. At that age the plumbing is rarely the reason.
Brandermill is its own Census area near Midlothian. It is in Chesterfield County too, so the same building office handles permits.
On our service-area map it is about 12 miles from the point for Richmond, in a straight line. The estimate is free in Midlothian too.
