We had such a great experience working with Gabriel and his team at Bencke’s Tile Bath Remodel. From the very beginning, Gabriel was incredibly communicative, responsive, responsible, and someone we felt we could completely trust. He always kept us updated, answered every question, and made what could have been a stressful renovation feel easy.
Our Jack-and-Jill bathroom was 25 years old and very builder-grade and felt cramped with way too many doors. Gabriel helped completely transform the space into a bathroom that feels so much larger, brighter, and honestly looks like something out of a magazine.
The quality of the work is exceptional. They waterproofed the bathroom properly, insulated the tub, installed a linear drain with a perfectly sloped floor so the water drains exactly where it should, and the tile work is absolutely flawless. The floating vanity, mirror, and every finish were installed with so much attention to detail.
What I appreciated just as much was that Gabriel truly stands behind his work. If we noticed even the smallest thing, he was happy to come back and make it right without any hesitation. It’s rare to find a contractor who genuinely wants everything to be perfect.
We interviewed several contractors before choosing Gabriel, and I am so glad we did. The final result exceeded our expectations, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gabriel and his team to anyone looking for a bathroom remodel. They do beautiful work, they’re honest, and they’re the kind of people you actually enjoy working with. Hanover County, just northeast of the city of Richmond
Mechanicsville is an unincorporated community in Hanover County, not in Henrico, which is why Hanover County, and not Richmond, handles its building permits. The Census draws its own line around Mechanicsville, and it is smaller than the area people call by that name.
Richmond, Henrico, Glen Allen and the rest of Hanover County are its neighbors. Named places inside the Census area include Pearsons Corner, Oak Forest, Kings Charter, Pole Green, Dogwood Knoll and Brandy Creek Estates. On our service-area map, its point is about 6 miles from the point for Richmond, in a straight line.
Mechanicsville homes, from the 1980s to now
Inside the Census line, the American Community Survey for 2020 to 2024 puts the median home at 1990, give or take two years. The area has 15,947 homes. The 1980s are the biggest decade, with 20.0 percent, 30.9 percent were built before 1980 and 16.2 percent before 1970.
About three in ten homes were built before 1980, and those rooms may still have their first tub. There the tub and the tile around it are what to inspect. In the newer ones, a fresh plan for the shower is often what the room needs.
Mechanicsville: what to know before the first tile
Asbestos paperwork before 1985
Hanover County asks for an asbestos certificate with the permit application when the house was built before January 1, 1985. In a bathroom, that is worth asking about before demo starts.
River water through Richmond
The county’s own water report says Hanover has bought water from Richmond since 1994, mainly for the Hanover Airpark and Mechanicsville. The report lists no hardness figure, so we do not quote one.
Henrico is next door
Henrico and Hanover counties meet near Mechanicsville, and each has its own building office and rules. Check the county line first, then the office.
Owners are most of the area
The Census counts 75.5 percent of occupied homes in the Mechanicsville area as owner-occupied. For rentals, get your landlord’s yes in writing first.

Who to call in Mechanicsville about a permit
Mechanicsville has no building office of its own. Permits go through Hanover County’s Building Inspector’s Office at 7516 County Complex Road in Hanover.
The county page we read does not list when a permit is needed or exempt, so we cannot tell you whether a new tile job needs one. It does ask for an asbestos certificate on homes built before 1985. A call to the office settles the permit question for your bathroom.

We love our new kitchen tile backsplash! Working with Bencke’s was a great experience, from the start with good communication and professionalism to the finish with a beautiful job well done!
Gabriel came by to give an estimate on doing tile work and was very thorough in articulating his approach, timeline and cost. He gave a wonderful idea to put a marble counter ledge which turned out really beautiful. He was so quick in starting the project and kept everything so clean with protecting furniture surround the bathroom. His crew were so polite and did an amazing job. I’m so grateful for them completing this so quickly. Gabriel went above and beyond to get everything done quickly but also with excellence. I would highly recommend him and his crew!
We needed an access panel for our tile bathtub and Gabriel was able to give us a quick estimate. He delivered flawlessly and we are very happy!
I can't say enough about Gabriel and his team. I put in an emergency request for kitchen and bathroom tile repairs/replacements on a Tuesday, and they were out fixing it and doing an amazing job by Thursday!! Highly recommend. Can't say enough good things! Thank you!

Yes. Mechanicsville is one of our three main areas, with Henrico and Chesterfield. The estimate is free and at your home.
Hanover County. Henrico is next door, and many people near the line are not sure. The county office that handles permits is Hanover’s.
If tile is loose, grout keeps cracking or the floor feels soft, yes. Forty years of use shows in the same spots. We look at the room at the free estimate.
It can. For houses built before 1985, Hanover County asks for an asbestos certificate with the permit application, so ask the office before demo is planned.
