We had such a great experience working with Gabriel and his team at Bencke’s Tile Bath Remodel. From the very beginning, Gabriel was incredibly communicative, responsive, responsible, and someone we felt we could completely trust. He always kept us updated, answered every question, and made what could have been a stressful renovation feel easy.
Our Jack-and-Jill bathroom was 25 years old and very builder-grade and felt cramped with way too many doors. Gabriel helped completely transform the space into a bathroom that feels so much larger, brighter, and honestly looks like something out of a magazine.
The quality of the work is exceptional. They waterproofed the bathroom properly, insulated the tub, installed a linear drain with a perfectly sloped floor so the water drains exactly where it should, and the tile work is absolutely flawless. The floating vanity, mirror, and every finish were installed with so much attention to detail.
What I appreciated just as much was that Gabriel truly stands behind his work. If we noticed even the smallest thing, he was happy to come back and make it right without any hesitation. It’s rare to find a contractor who genuinely wants everything to be perfect.
We interviewed several contractors before choosing Gabriel, and I am so glad we did. The final result exceeded our expectations, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gabriel and his team to anyone looking for a bathroom remodel. They do beautiful work, they’re honest, and they’re the kind of people you actually enjoy working with. A county next to the city, with Richmond on many mailing addresses
Henrico is a county, not a city, and it sits next to the city of Richmond. Your mailing address may say Richmond even though your house is in Henrico. If you are not sure which one you live in, tell us your street and we will confirm that we cover it.
Glen Allen and Short Pump are inside the county and have pages of their own, and Chesterfield and Hanover counties are next door. Communities in the county include Tuckahoe, Lakeside, Highland Springs, Sandston, Varina and Fair Oaks. On our service-area map, the point for Henrico is about 8 miles from the point for Richmond, in a straight line. That is a map measure, not a drive time.
Four in ten Henrico homes are older than 1980
Census figures for 2020 to 2024 put the median home in Henrico County at 1985, give or take a year. Of the county’s 144,916 homes, 41.4 percent were built before 1980 and 28.5 percent before 1970. The 1980s are the biggest decade, at 17.0 percent.
For a bathroom, that split matters. A house from the 1960s or 70s may still have its first tub, an old valve in the wall and tile set the old way, in thick mortar or on plaster. Those rooms are best opened and looked at before the plan is drawn. A newer house gives a cleaner start, and the talk turns to layout and taste.
Henrico bathrooms: four things to settle first
The first tub
In homes from before 1980 the tub and the valve behind it may be the originals. If you are thinking about a tub to shower swap, ask what is behind that wall before you pick tile.
Water at about 4 grains
Henrico’s own water page says its treated water averages 64 milligrams per liter, about 4 grains per gallon. That is a modest mineral level, so glass and fixtures show less crust than in hard-water areas. Steam still feeds soap film and mildew in the grout.
Old and new on one street
With a median of 1985, a Henrico street can hold a 1960s ranch and a house from the 2010s. Two bathrooms of the same size can need very different work behind the surface.
Mostly owners
The Census counts 64.5 percent of occupied Henrico homes as owner-occupied. If you rent, get your landlord’s yes in writing before tile goes in.

Who to call in Henrico about a permit
Henrico County has its own building office, the Department of Building Construction and Inspections. Its Permit Center is at 4301 East Parham Road. Henrico homes do not go through the city of Richmond.
The county’s permit page asks for a permit when work involves the water supply, the drains or the vents, and it names bathtubs, showers, sinks and toilets when fixtures are first installed. It does not speak to a change of tile alone. A tub to shower swap often touches the drain, so call the Permit Center about your plan. The page also lists disturbing asbestos-containing materials during construction or demolition, worth knowing in an older house.

We love our new kitchen tile backsplash! Working with Bencke’s was a great experience, from the start with good communication and professionalism to the finish with a beautiful job well done!
Gabriel came by to give an estimate on doing tile work and was very thorough in articulating his approach, timeline and cost. He gave a wonderful idea to put a marble counter ledge which turned out really beautiful. He was so quick in starting the project and kept everything so clean with protecting furniture surround the bathroom. His crew were so polite and did an amazing job. I’m so grateful for them completing this so quickly. Gabriel went above and beyond to get everything done quickly but also with excellence. I would highly recommend him and his crew!
We needed an access panel for our tile bathtub and Gabriel was able to give us a quick estimate. He delivered flawlessly and we are very happy!
I can't say enough about Gabriel and his team. I put in an emergency request for kitchen and bathroom tile repairs/replacements on a Tuesday, and they were out fixing it and doing an amazing job by Thursday!! Highly recommend. Can't say enough good things! Thank you!

It can. A house that age may still have its first tub and an older valve behind the wall. Someone looks at the room at the free estimate, and the plan starts from what is really there.
