We had such a great experience working with Gabriel and his team at Bencke’s Tile Bath Remodel. From the very beginning, Gabriel was incredibly communicative, responsive, responsible, and someone we felt we could completely trust. He always kept us updated, answered every question, and made what could have been a stressful renovation feel easy.
Our Jack-and-Jill bathroom was 25 years old and very builder-grade and felt cramped with way too many doors. Gabriel helped completely transform the space into a bathroom that feels so much larger, brighter, and honestly looks like something out of a magazine.
The quality of the work is exceptional. They waterproofed the bathroom properly, insulated the tub, installed a linear drain with a perfectly sloped floor so the water drains exactly where it should, and the tile work is absolutely flawless. The floating vanity, mirror, and every finish were installed with so much attention to detail.
What I appreciated just as much was that Gabriel truly stands behind his work. If we noticed even the smallest thing, he was happy to come back and make it right without any hesitation. It’s rare to find a contractor who genuinely wants everything to be perfect.
We interviewed several contractors before choosing Gabriel, and I am so glad we did. The final result exceeded our expectations, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gabriel and his team to anyone looking for a bathroom remodel. They do beautiful work, they’re honest, and they’re the kind of people you actually enjoy working with. What is behind the old backsplash in a Henrico kitchen
The U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey for 2020 to 2024 puts the median Henrico home at 1985, give or take a year. It counts 41.4 percent of the county’s homes as built before 1980, close to 60,000 houses. That is a wide mix, and the age of your kitchen tells you what to expect on the wall.
A kitchen from the 1960s or 1970s may have small tile set in mortar, wood paneling or a plastic laminate behind the counter. A kitchen from the 1980s or 1990s may have a few plain rows of tile, or only paint. New tile goes on best over a flat, solid wall, so the first question is always what sits under the old backsplash. Someone looks at that wall at the free estimate.
What to think about before a Henrico backsplash
The wall behind the tile
Close to 60,000 Henrico homes were built before 1980. If yours is one of them, old tile, paneling or laminate may be on the wall. Some of it can stay under new tile if the surface is flat and solid. Some of it has to come off.
Water at the faucet
Henrico’s water department says its treated water averages 64 milligrams of hardness per liter, about 4 grains per gallon. Spots near the faucet come with any kitchen. The grout behind the cooktop has the harder life, with heat and grease.
The eighties kitchen
The Census counts more Henrico homes from the 1980s (17 percent) than from any other decade. A kitchen from those years may have a short strip of tile that stops at the cabinets. A taller wall of tile can make it feel new without touching the cabinets.
Your call on the look
Census figures show 64.5 percent of occupied Henrico homes are lived in by their owners, so tile, pattern and grout color are usually your decision. Bring a few pictures of what you like to the estimate.

Who to call in Henrico about a permit
Henrico County has its own building office, the Department of Building Construction and Inspections. Its Permit Center is at 4301 East Parham Road, and it is separate from the city of Richmond.
The county’s permit page asks for a permit when work touches the water supply, the drains or the vents. It does not say whether replacing wall tile alone needs one. It also lists removing or disturbing any asbestos-containing material as work that needs a permit. If you are unsure about your house, call the Permit Center before anything starts.

We love our new kitchen tile backsplash! Working with Bencke’s was a great experience, from the start with good communication and professionalism to the finish with a beautiful job well done!
Gabriel came by to give an estimate on doing tile work and was very thorough in articulating his approach, timeline and cost. He gave a wonderful idea to put a marble counter ledge which turned out really beautiful. He was so quick in starting the project and kept everything so clean with protecting furniture surround the bathroom. His crew were so polite and did an amazing job. I’m so grateful for them completing this so quickly. Gabriel went above and beyond to get everything done quickly but also with excellence. I would highly recommend him and his crew!
We needed an access panel for our tile bathtub and Gabriel was able to give us a quick estimate. He delivered flawlessly and we are very happy!
I can't say enough about Gabriel and his team. I put in an emergency request for kitchen and bathroom tile repairs/replacements on a Tuesday, and they were out fixing it and doing an amazing job by Thursday!! Highly recommend. Can't say enough good things! Thank you!
Frequently asked questions
Don’t see your question? Call or write and we will answer it.
Yes. If your house is in Henrico County, we cover it, whatever the mailing address says. Give us your street when you ask for the estimate and we will confirm.
It depends on the wall. Old tile can stay only if it is flat, solid and well stuck. If it is cracked, loose or uneven, the old surface has to be dealt with first. The free estimate is where someone looks at it.
Henrico reports an average of 64 milligrams of hardness per liter, about 4 grains per gallon. Some spotting by the faucet is normal with any tap water. Wiping the tile dry keeps it from building up.
Henrico’s permit page does not mention wall tile by name. It does require a permit when plumbing or drain work is involved. Call the Permit Center to be sure for your own job.
