The houses

Chesterfield kitchens and the grout behind the cooktop

The U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey for 2020 to 2024 puts the median Chesterfield home at 1990, give or take a year. About 29 percent of the county’s homes were built before 1980, and 20.5 percent date from the 1980s alone.

That makes Chesterfield a county of mostly newer houses with a solid core of older ones. A kitchen from 1990 has had more than three decades of cooking behind the range. The grout there may be stained or crumbling even when the tile is still sound. Whether the answer is new tile depends on what the wall looks like.

Chesterfield notes

Four things Chesterfield kitchens have in common

  • Water the county calls soft

Chesterfield says its water is naturally soft, in the range of 40 to 70 parts per million, or 2.0 to 4.0 grains per gallon. Glass tile shows water spots more than most, and softer water is easier on it.

  • A 1990s backsplash

In a kitchen of that age, the backsplash may be a short strip of tile or only paint. Taller tile gives the wall more weight, and it is easier to scrub than painted drywall.

  • Older homes too

Close to three in ten Chesterfield homes were built before 1980. In those, find out what is on the wall under the old tile before you pick a new one.

  • Owners who plan to stay

Census figures show 76.7 percent of occupied homes in Chesterfield are lived in by their owners. For people who stay, a tile that wipes clean and a grout you can scrub count for more than a trend.

Permits and who to call

Who to call in Chesterfield about a permit

Chesterfield County Building Inspection, part of Community Development, is at 9800 Government Center Parkway. It is the county office to call about permits.

The county’s permit page gives examples of work that needs no permit, such as new floor coverings and replacing sinks, toilets and faucets. It lists moving, adding or removing a wall as work that needs one. Wall tile is not named in either list, so call the office instead of guessing.

Bencke’s Tile Bathroom Remodel

Janna K.Bathroom remodel

We had such a great experience working with Gabriel and his team at Bencke’s Tile Bath Remodel. From the very beginning, Gabriel was incredibly communicative, responsive, responsible, and someone we felt we could completely trust. He always kept us updated, answered every question, and made what could have been a stressful renovation feel easy.

Our Jack-and-Jill bathroom was 25 years old and very builder-grade and felt cramped with way too many doors. Gabriel helped completely transform the space into a bathroom that feels so much larger, brighter, and honestly looks like something out of a magazine.

The quality of the work is exceptional. They waterproofed the bathroom properly, insulated the tub, installed a linear drain with a perfectly sloped floor so the water drains exactly where it should, and the tile work is absolutely flawless. The floating vanity, mirror, and every finish were installed with so much attention to detail.

What I appreciated just as much was that Gabriel truly stands behind his work. If we noticed even the smallest thing, he was happy to come back and make it right without any hesitation. It’s rare to find a contractor who genuinely wants everything to be perfect.

We interviewed several contractors before choosing Gabriel, and I am so glad we did. The final result exceeded our expectations, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gabriel and his team to anyone looking for a bathroom remodel. They do beautiful work, they’re honest, and they’re the kind of people you actually enjoy working with. Adding the before and after pictures for reference!

On our service-area map, the point for Chesterfield is about 12 miles from the point for Richmond, in a straight line. That is a map measure, not a drive time. Chesterfield is one of our main areas, and the estimate is free there.

Chesterfield describes its water as naturally soft. Soft water leaves fewer mineral spots on glass and polished tile than hard water does. Grease from the stove is still the thing to wipe off.

The county’s permit page lists examples of work that needs no permit and work that does. It does not name wall tile. Call Chesterfield County Building Inspection to be sure.

You can. The wall behind the cooktop takes the most heat and grease, so it is a natural place to start. We can talk about how far the tile should run when we see the kitchen.
