We had such a great experience working with Gabriel and his team at Bencke’s Tile Bath Remodel. From the very beginning, Gabriel was incredibly communicative, responsive, responsible, and someone we felt we could completely trust. He always kept us updated, answered every question, and made what could have been a stressful renovation feel easy.
Our Jack-and-Jill bathroom was 25 years old and very builder-grade and felt cramped with way too many doors. Gabriel helped completely transform the space into a bathroom that feels so much larger, brighter, and honestly looks like something out of a magazine.
The quality of the work is exceptional. They waterproofed the bathroom properly, insulated the tub, installed a linear drain with a perfectly sloped floor so the water drains exactly where it should, and the tile work is absolutely flawless. The floating vanity, mirror, and every finish were installed with so much attention to detail.
What I appreciated just as much was that Gabriel truly stands behind his work. If we noticed even the smallest thing, he was happy to come back and make it right without any hesitation. It’s rare to find a contractor who genuinely wants everything to be perfect.
We interviewed several contractors before choosing Gabriel, and I am so glad we did. The final result exceeded our expectations, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gabriel and his team to anyone looking for a bathroom remodel. They do beautiful work, they’re honest, and they’re the kind of people you actually enjoy working with. Chester kitchens from the 1980s and before
The Census draws its own line around Chester, and it is smaller than the area people call Chester. Inside it, the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey for 2020 to 2024 puts the median home at about 1990, give or take three years, a wide margin for an area this size. The 1980s are the biggest decade, with 19.1 percent of the homes. Of the 9,829 homes, 30.3 percent were built before 1980.
So Chester kitchens run from the 1960s to this decade, and the older ones are common. A kitchen from the 1980s may still have its original small tile or a laminate strip. Both can be replaced, and what the work involves depends on the wall behind them.
Chester kitchens: what the age of the house tells you
A 1980s backsplash
A few rows of small square tile are a common sight in kitchens of that era. The grout lines are where the wear shows first.
Three in ten are older
The Census counts 30.3 percent of the homes in the Chester area as built before 1980. Older houses are the ones where it pays to look at the wall before you choose a tile.
Places in the area
Names that go with the Chester area include Chester Station, Osborne’s Landing and Harrowgate.
Owners
71.3 percent of occupied homes here are owner-occupied, by the Census count. Owners usually want a backsplash that will still look good after years of cooking.

Who to call in Chester about a permit
Chester is part of Chesterfield County, so there is no separate city hall to ask. The county’s Building Inspection office, in Community Development, is at 9800 Government Center Parkway.
The county’s permit page lists replacing fixtures such as sinks and faucets, and installing new floor coverings, among the jobs that need no permit. Moving, adding or removing a wall needs one. It does not name wall tile, so a short call settles it.

We love our new kitchen tile backsplash! Working with Bencke’s was a great experience, from the start with good communication and professionalism to the finish with a beautiful job well done!
Gabriel came by to give an estimate on doing tile work and was very thorough in articulating his approach, timeline and cost. He gave a wonderful idea to put a marble counter ledge which turned out really beautiful. He was so quick in starting the project and kept everything so clean with protecting furniture surround the bathroom. His crew were so polite and did an amazing job. I’m so grateful for them completing this so quickly. Gabriel went above and beyond to get everything done quickly but also with excellence. I would highly recommend him and his crew!
We needed an access panel for our tile bathtub and Gabriel was able to give us a quick estimate. He delivered flawlessly and we are very happy!
I can't say enough about Gabriel and his team. I put in an emergency request for kitchen and bathroom tile repairs/replacements on a Tuesday, and they were out fixing it and doing an amazing job by Thursday!! Highly recommend. Can't say enough good things! Thank you!

Yes. Chester is in Chesterfield County, one of our main areas. On our service-area map its point is about 13 miles from the point for Richmond, in a straight line.
Not always. If it is flat, solid and well stuck, new tile can sometimes go over it. If it is cracked, loose or uneven, it needs attention first. Someone looks at the wall at the free estimate.
A simple tile in a color close to your counters keeps an older kitchen calm. A pattern panel behind the range adds interest without clashing. Check a sample against the cabinets in the morning and again at night.
Chesterfield’s page names floors and fixtures among jobs with no permit. It does not name wall tile. Call Chesterfield County Building Inspection with your address and plan.
