Walls

Henrico walls run from plaster to drywall

Census figures for 2020 to 2024 put the median Henrico home at 1985, give or take a year. Of the county’s 144,916 homes, 41.4 percent date from before 1980, and the 1980s are the largest decade at 17.0 percent.

For a tile job, the decade tells you what the wall is made of. A house from the 1950s or 60s may have plaster walls, and old tile around a tub may sit in a thick bed of mortar. A house from the 1980s more often has drywall, with tile glued on and a tub surround that has seen decades of steam. Newer homes have drywall too, and a wet wall in those still needs a base made for water.

Notes

Henrico: where tile goes in a house this age

  • Tub and shower walls

In houses from before 1980, the wall around the tub is the most common tiled surface. Whether the old tile comes off or stays depends on what holds it, and that gets checked before a new pattern is chosen.

  • A laundry room wall

Tile behind a washer or a utility sink makes a hard-working room easier to wipe down. The wall back there is usually plain drywall, which wants a proper base if it will get wet.

  • Kitchen walls past the counter

Some Henrico kitchens from the 1980s carry tile up a wall well beyond the backsplash. That wall can be redone in a new tile, and our Henrico backsplash page covers the strip behind the cooktop.

  • The owner decides

The Census counts 64.5 percent of occupied Henrico homes as lived in by their owners. If you rent, the owner’s written yes comes before tile goes up.

Permits

Henrico permits: what the county page says about walls

The county office for building permits is the Permit Center at 4301 East Parham Road in Henrico, part of the Department of Building Construction and Inspections.

Its permit page talks about water, drain and vent work, and it says nothing about tile by itself on a wall. If a wall job means opening a wall that holds pipes, ask the office before the plan is final.

Bencke’s Tile Bathroom Remodel

Janna K.Bathroom remodel

We had such a great experience working with Gabriel and his team at Bencke’s Tile Bath Remodel. From the very beginning, Gabriel was incredibly communicative, responsive, responsible, and someone we felt we could completely trust. He always kept us updated, answered every question, and made what could have been a stressful renovation feel easy.

Our Jack-and-Jill bathroom was 25 years old and very builder-grade and felt cramped with way too many doors. Gabriel helped completely transform the space into a bathroom that feels so much larger, brighter, and honestly looks like something out of a magazine.

The quality of the work is exceptional. They waterproofed the bathroom properly, insulated the tub, installed a linear drain with a perfectly sloped floor so the water drains exactly where it should, and the tile work is absolutely flawless. The floating vanity, mirror, and every finish were installed with so much attention to detail.

What I appreciated just as much was that Gabriel truly stands behind his work. If we noticed even the smallest thing, he was happy to come back and make it right without any hesitation. It’s rare to find a contractor who genuinely wants everything to be perfect.

We interviewed several contractors before choosing Gabriel, and I am so glad we did. The final result exceeded our expectations, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gabriel and his team to anyone looking for a bathroom remodel. They do beautiful work, they’re honest, and they’re the kind of people you actually enjoy working with. Adding the before and after pictures for reference!

Gabriel came by to give an estimate on doing tile work and was very thorough in articulating his approach, timeline and cost. He gave a wonderful idea to put a marble counter ledge which turned out really beautiful. He was so quick in starting the project and kept everything so clean with protecting furniture surround the bathroom. His crew were so polite and did an amazing job. I’m so grateful for them completing this so quickly. Gabriel went above and beyond to get everything done quickly but also with excellence. I would highly recommend him and his crew!

Frequently asked questions

Don’t see your question? Call or write and we will answer it.

Not always. Old tile that is flat, solid and well bonded can sometimes stay. Cracked, hollow or loose tile has to go, and so does anything on a soft wall. Someone checks at the free estimate.

Yes. Tell us which wall gets wet and what stands against it, and we will measure it at your home.

It does not mention tile by itself. It does ask for a permit when work changes the water supply, drains or vents. Call the Permit Center if your wall job goes near pipes.
