We had such a great experience working with Gabriel and his team at Bencke’s Tile Bath Remodel. From the very beginning, Gabriel was incredibly communicative, responsive, responsible, and someone we felt we could completely trust. He always kept us updated, answered every question, and made what could have been a stressful renovation feel easy.
Our Jack-and-Jill bathroom was 25 years old and very builder-grade and felt cramped with way too many doors. Gabriel helped completely transform the space into a bathroom that feels so much larger, brighter, and honestly looks like something out of a magazine.
The quality of the work is exceptional. They waterproofed the bathroom properly, insulated the tub, installed a linear drain with a perfectly sloped floor so the water drains exactly where it should, and the tile work is absolutely flawless. The floating vanity, mirror, and every finish were installed with so much attention to detail.
What I appreciated just as much was that Gabriel truly stands behind his work. If we noticed even the smallest thing, he was happy to come back and make it right without any hesitation. It’s rare to find a contractor who genuinely wants everything to be perfect.
We interviewed several contractors before choosing Gabriel, and I am so glad we did. The final result exceeded our expectations, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gabriel and his team to anyone looking for a bathroom remodel. They do beautiful work, they’re honest, and they’re the kind of people you actually enjoy working with. Hanover County: one home in three predates 1980
Census figures for 2020 to 2024 count 44,589 homes in Hanover County, with a median build year of 1991, give or take two years. The 1990s are the largest decade at 20.5 percent. Before 1980 come 32.2 percent, and before 1970, 18.9 percent.
That adds up to a county with two kinds of wall. About a third of its houses may carry plaster or old mortar-set tile, and the rest are newer drywall houses. Both are tiled the same way once the wall is sound, and the older ones need more looking first.
Hanover County: tile on town lots and country roads
Wells in the rural parts
The county runs a suburban water system and separate rural systems fed by deep wells in the Potomac Aquifer, according to its water pages. A house on a well should tell us at the estimate, because minerals in the water mark grout.
Ashland to Doswell
The county spans the town of Ashland and villages such as Atlee, Doswell and Beaverdam, so house ages differ a lot from place to place.
Owners at 82.1 percent
In the Census count 82.1 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, so most tile choices rest with the family that lives there.
Tile from the 1980s
A bath tiled in the 1980s may now have worn grout and a caulk line that has lost its seal. That is the point where water finds the wall.

Hanover: the Building Inspector’s Office and the 1985 line
Hanover County’s Building Inspector’s Office is at 7516 County Complex Road, Hanover.
Hanover’s rule is about age: for renovation, demolition and reroofing on a structure built before January 1, 1985, the application needs an asbestos certificate. About a third of the county’s homes predate 1980, so the line can matter. The pages we read do not list which jobs are exempt from a permit, so ask the office about a wall of tile.

We love our new kitchen tile backsplash! Working with Bencke’s was a great experience, from the start with good communication and professionalism to the finish with a beautiful job well done!
Gabriel came by to give an estimate on doing tile work and was very thorough in articulating his approach, timeline and cost. He gave a wonderful idea to put a marble counter ledge which turned out really beautiful. He was so quick in starting the project and kept everything so clean with protecting furniture surround the bathroom. His crew were so polite and did an amazing job. I’m so grateful for them completing this so quickly. Gabriel went above and beyond to get everything done quickly but also with excellence. I would highly recommend him and his crew!
We needed an access panel for our tile bathtub and Gabriel was able to give us a quick estimate. He delivered flawlessly and we are very happy!
I can't say enough about Gabriel and his team. I put in an emergency request for kitchen and bathroom tile repairs/replacements on a Tuesday, and they were out fixing it and doing an amazing job by Thursday!! Highly recommend. Can't say enough good things! Thank you!
Frequently asked questions
Don’t see your question? Call or write and we will answer it.
The county asks for one on renovation work in structures built before January 1, 1985. Whether a tile job counts as that work is a question for the Building Inspector’s Office.
On our service-area map the county is about 16.1 miles from the point for Richmond, in a straight line, and the estimate is free in Hanover too.
Hard to say. We found no single hardness figure for the county’s water. If you are on a well, minerals can leave marks on grout, and a water test tells you more than we can from here.
It might be. Plaster, drywall and paneling all turn up in houses of that decade. Someone looks at the wall at the free estimate.
